Tis The Season For Volume

Do you know how many turkeys are eaten during the holiday season? Below are a few interesting facts regarding the volume of turkeys eaten, cards sent, and much more.

Christmas Cards
Do you enjoy receiving cards in the mail? How many do you think you get each season? There are roughly 1.9 billion Christmas cards sent in the United States every year to friends, family members, and acquaintances, making Christmas the #1 card sending occurrence, followed by Valentine’s Day.

Packages
The number UPS is expected to deliver this year is over 340 million. The busiest day is expected to reach 20 million deliveries, which translates to 230 packages being delivered every second during that day.

Turkey
There are approximately 60 million turkeys consumed in the United States through the holiday season. Each American eats around 13.7 pounds of turkey every year! You think you are tired of turkey once Christmas is over? This may be why.

Christmas Trees
Next time you are lugging your tree home, remember this little fact. There are 20.8 million Christmas trees cut in the U.S. every year, with Oregon being the largest producer. Tree farmers retail roughly $506 million from the sale of trees. There is $69 million worth of artificial trees imported from China alone. Artificial Christmas trees have outsold real trees every year since 1991.

Christmas Tree Ornaments
China is the largest importer of Christmas ornaments which totals $561 million between January and August. Apparently those little trinkets are purchased year-round to have handy when Christmas time approaches.

Decorating
Most malls and other stores begin decorating for the holiday season on November 1st.

Holiday Shopping
Holiday sales are expected to hit $439.53 billion this year if the economy begins to improve. December accounts for roughly 15% of stores’ yearly sales, except for in the case of jewelry stores, which is closer to 24%. However, most Americans only expect to spend an average of $681 each this holiday reason. On Black Friday, approximately $8.01 billion was spent, totaling $16.8 billion for the weekend. Residence of the New England states are expected to spend the most, with the South expected to spend considerably less.

Toys
Roughly 45% of shoppers this year will be purchasing toys, with Barbie and video games being the most sought after products.

Holiday Music
The most frequently played holiday song is “Jingle Bells”, with “White Christmas” running a close second. Bing Crosby’s “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” is the #1 best selling Christmas single of all time.

Valentine’s Day – Romance or Profits

On an annual basis there is certainly a surge in romantic interest as February, the Month of Hearts, approaches, and the fragrance of Valentine’s Day commences to waft within the air. When it comes to reality, however, how much of that surge is truly about romance? Is it all a commercial activity intended to rake in the profits?

I don’t believe anyone can argue that commercial interests contribute significantly towards the publicity that surrounds Valentine’s Day. You see it everywhere from Christmas onwards; the Valentine’s greeting cards, the Valentine’s chocolates with their heart designed boxes and photos of roses, plus of course the many advertisements for the roses themselves and how you have to book early for that Valentine night time dinner.

The business aspect of Valentine’s might appear so overwhelming you might be persuaded to consider that it is nothing at all to do with love and romance at all, but simply about making money; that the hearts and the roses are nothing more than artificial symbols of a romantic world that no longer exists.

With much of Traditional western society having a hardened veneer, where underneath relationships fall apart with a gentle wind, and divorce proceedings being built into marriage, anyone might be forgiven for taking this kind of a cynical perspective. Nevertheless, dismissing the entire Valentine Day experience as nothing but commercial is much too simplistic, and to do so is to deny oneself a much richer experience: that of genuine ambiance and love.

Any commercial endeavor only succeeds if there is a demand, and Valentine’s Day continues to be a business success for quite some time. Before the success, the Valentine’s tradition itself had evolved over many hundreds of years, long before commerce became the apparent driving force behind it. So where has the contemporary demand come from for an event such as Valentine’s Day?

Love, attraction, obsession, and romance are as old as the hills, and are integral to the human constitution. While many modern day individuals may declare that they choose to be alone and do not require other people, do not need love and romance in their life, they are not being truly honest with themselves and most likely feel something very different. It is not “macho” to publicly need love, affection and romance, so many hide from his or her own truth, that they probably yearn for that love of another as much as the most openly romantic.

Others, though, reflect as much desire for romantic love as any man or woman over the centuries, and it is deeply natural to do so. They reveal those desires as they go searching for romantic fiction, love poetry and real love testimonies by the million. Considering they do have love in their lives as Valentine’s Day comes around, then they are well equipped to make the most of it; to indulge in the romantic image with their own twist of truth and need.

Love and ambiance have not died and will by no means die. A few may shy away in fear of the discomfort of a failed or a tragic romance; but others dive in head first, not fearful that their love will turn out to be as destructive as Romeo and Juliet. Those people provide the never ending need for a Valentine’s Day that transcends the financial and explores all of the bright and dark corridors of romance. Put simply, experience life to the fullest, and chance the pain and heartache to achieve the ecstasy.

Thanksgiving – What Were the Pilgrims Thankful For

People have voiced their curiosity to discover why the pilgrims came to land on Plymouth rock in the first place. The answer would lead me to discover a people driven, not just to a new land, but to a land that was free of all the tyranny and oppression they had know in their own European countries. The Rock became less mystical to me as an adult while the purpose of the pilgrims became a more venerable matter in my thinking.

It is impossible to ponder those brave Pilgrims, our forefathers, risking life and limb and enduring the perils of the sea, the unknown, starvation and deprivation of every sort without wondering about the very strong reasons they were so willing to face these perils and hardships. Discovering their reasons also provided answers to how the first Thanksgiving came about. The Pilgrims gave thanks because they saw the promise of their quest near at hand and in some small way at the harvest time of that first year it looked like their dream had gotten itself underway.

No one knows the exact words that were spoken in that prayer just before the first thanksgiving meal was eaten. But if the collective thoughts of all who sat for that meal could be known, we can be sure they were about things greater than the personal or family gains and safety that many prayers are reduced to today.

Their thankfulness was for the possibilities of religious freedom, taxation with representation, fair hearings before magistrates when charged with crimes, relief from oppressive monarchs and freedom to speak their minds without fear of reprisal. Many of the things taken for granted and rarely mentioned in the thanksgiving prayers of today are what they were thankful for.

It is said that about ninety Indians were present at the feast which lasted about three days. The very sight of these natives with completely unknown and diverse dress and culture eating with our tattered but dignified forefathers in harmony and full acceptance is a picture of America’s original dream, the dream of a place where everyone is welcome and able to work together in a common society. I am sure that they were thankful for that small microcosmic example of the larger dream they all shared for the country’s future.

The pilgrims were thankful for the beginning of their dream. We should be thankful for the fullness of that dream. The pilgrims were people who knew all to well that nobility was not inherent to those born in palaces but it was a state of the soul and a dignity of purpose found in people of higher thought. They were thankful on that first thanksgiving for the visible result of that higher thought. As the holidays come near, Happy Thanksgiving America.

Making More Money During The Holidays

Christmas greetings

Tis the season! People are in a buying mood. Many retailers make half their yearly revenue from now until Christmas. People will be shopping for gifts, decor, food, and more for Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza. How can you increase your sales during the holiday season? If you run a small or home-based business, make sure you plan to incorporate some special promotions during this time. It’s tempting to put off business until “after the holidays” and focus on your own celebrations—there’s always so much to do. That’s fine if it’s your choice. But if you are trying to increase business, now is a great opportunity to do so.

Here are some simple, low-cost ways to increase your revenues during this busy shopping season:

Revamp your descriptions:

Think about how your product/service would make a nice gift and tell your prospective customers. “Makes a great gift for the special guy in your life”. Perhaps you could create a gift suggestions flyer. People need help choosing great presents for their friends and family. Help them out by telling them what to buy for their mom, dad, wife, husband, sweetheart, child, co-worker, aunt, etc. Offer your “gift-buying” guide free on your website, put it in with all your orders, and distribute it around town.

If you provide a service, those make great gifts, too—who doesn’t like a massage, or a free housecleaning, or a free tax planning session? Sell gift certificates for your services. A key selling point is that people don’t think to give services, but they can be very unique and appreciated gifts. You might have to come up with ideal recipients—i.e., for the harried homemaker, the busy executive, the loving mother, and so on. Tell your customer (the gift-giver) how much the recipient would love your service instead of a fruitcake

Create Gift Packages:

Perhaps you could bundle several products into a basket. Think about the “recipients” and create special baskets—for example, if you sell cosmetics, create a “teen-dream” makeup kit, an “anti-aging” kit, a “glamour party makeup” kit, and so on. Almost any business can come up with creative packaging or bundling for their products and for their services. For services, you could do a “buy one, get half-off” package. Or a buy three, get one free package. You can even team up with partners to create super packages—a spa and a housecleaning service could combine a massage & a house-cleaning for a fabulous gift for working moms.

Offer Free Gift Wrapping or Free Shipping:

The word “free” gets attention. Wrapping and shipping are two things that add to the cost of the gift and if you can include it, that would increase your sales. To make it worthwhile, set a spending requirement—free gift wrap on items over $50 or something similar. Ditto for shipping. You can even run specials where shipping is only $5 for all orders by a certain date, or gift wrapping is free on Mondays.

Holiday Give-Aways:

It’s nice to do something extra for your customers during the holidays. If you have a retail store, bring in Christmas cookies or candy or hot chocolate. If you ship products, buy some ornaments at the dollar store and toss them in with the orders. If you visit clients, take a small goodie bag or fruit basket. The ideas are endless. For spa-type businesses (products or services for anything from manicures to bath gel), consider a sample of a product – a holiday-printed emery board costs pennies and is a nice thought. For an event planner, send everyone a “holiday party guide” even if you don’t have their business this year—fill it with great ideas and you’ll get more business! For a wedding planner, a personalized ornament for all your wedding couples will create much good will.

My Holiday Card Rule:

If you are going to send holiday cards, please, please, please sign them. Having your company name pre-printed on the card is so impersonal that you’d do better saving your money. Hand-addressing your cards is nice, too, but some people have illegible handwriting, so printing the envelopes is okay. But, really, an unsigned card is simply going to send the message that you don’t have time to be bothered with things like signing cards and you never want your customers to think you don’t have time for them. It’s the greeting card version of a form letter.

Action Item: Take a few minutes to write down some holiday ideas you can implement in your own business—just one could be enough. Don’t overload yourself-one idea well executed will be more fruitful than 20 haphazard ones. Then, put it on your calendar and spread some holiday happiness to your customers!

Christmas Gifts for Her – A Unique Approach

Christmas gifts

The holidays are quickly approaching and that means you need to come up with Christmas gifts for her. Instead of stressing out, consider the following approach.

Christmas Gifts for Her – Gift Ideas

As the holidays approach, we are all subjected to a frustrating phenomenon. What the heck should I get for my wife, sister, mother, daughter and so on? We each arrive at the answer differently, but it usually comes in one of the following forms.

1. You see something while browsing a web site or moving with the herds at the mall,

2. You buy something you like, which of course means she will like it [lingerie?], or

3. You give up and buy soothing oils and such for the bath.

Entire industries have been set up around mans inability to think of good gift ideas for women. Next time you are the mall, take a look at the “bubble bath” stores. While you agonize of whether to go with the peach fragrances or the lavender skin restorer, you should try to keep in mind what such gifts say to her. When she opens the gift, she’ll think that you really didn’t put much thought into and react accordingly. This, of course, means there better be a little box somewhere under the tree containing a rare precious gem or car keys!

A Better Way

The best method for coming up with Christmas gifts for her is to consider what she really likes. Importantly, this does not mean considering what you think she SHOULD really like. Put another way, tickets to the next football game are not going to cut it. Instead, really give some thought to what she does when she has some spare time.

If she likes to go antique shopping, then buy her something related to antiques. Preferably, this should be a book or something discussing antiques, not actual antiques. Men have no taste, so don’t risk buying an antique she hates. Trust me on this one.

If your wife or daughter likes to get out into nature, you should consider something along those lines. If she likes to go for walks to get away from the chaos of the home, consider getting her something related to hiking. This could include things such as a book detailing the local hikes in your area or a Nomad Hiking Journal that will let her keep a diary of where she hiked and with who. Regardless, the point is you should give her something related to his passion.

The biggest key to coming up with Christmas gift ideas for her is to think about her. What does SHE like to do in her down time? Figure out the answer to that and you are well on your way to finding gifts that will go over big.
